Ecological Planning and Design of the Incas:

Using Native Peruvian Planning and Design as an Alternative to Conventional Planning in the Cusco Region of Peru

This study proposes an alternative to conventional design that respects culture and the environment by merging theories of ecological planning with Inca planning, design, and construction practices. The study supports not only a return to less technologically dependent methods of construction, but a renewed interest in indigenous design and planning methods. This study attempts to inform current planning practices by examining effective design strategies that were used by the Incas in 14th Century Peru.

Roof gardens are intimidating. Much liability comes with complex issues, e.g. condo association guidelines, structural bearing capacity, waterproofing, and hurricane codes. Add to that those architectural elements that were scaled to read as the terminus for a 34 story building, along with a poorly conceived partially completed swimming pool. Those issues, the salt and wind exposure, an occasional hurricane, and the lack of growing medium were other critical concerns. The sense of garden and comfort are primarily provided by garden architecture through materials, textures, and human scale proportions.

A Riverfront Visioning Project

The "Steinhatchee, Florida: Riverfront Visioning Project” honors tradition and manages growth by organizing land-use planning and design around three distinctly Southern concepts including front porches –  places to welcome short-term visitors, screen doors – places for seasonal residents, and front doors – places for preserving local cultural heritage. The project used a participatory design approach to develop a comprehensive plan that weaves public water access, wetland restoration, parks, trails, and a new town center into Steinhatchee’s historic fabric.

Anchored in Florida’s rural agrarian lifestyle, Tradition recreates a sense of old time Americana in a community setting.  Tradition Square, the new town center, draws upon this inspiration to create a unique pedestrian-friendly retail and community focal point. Reminiscent of many small towns across the heartland of America, it is designed around a central village green flanked by multi-story mixed-use buildings evocative of turn of the century storefronts. A waterfront park and promenade, amphitheater and vibrant interactive children’s fountain complete the experience.

Echoing the allure of Marco Island’s resort district, this 1.2-mile project included themed hardscape and landscape, specialty lighting, enhanced pedestrian/bicycle facilities, access management implementation, curbing, and drainage improvements. Through public involvement and collaboration with the City, the design team provided solutions integrating the City’s aesthetic vision, traffic calming, and pedestrian safety. Design was completed on an aggressive schedule meeting the City’s construction deadlines to receive $1,000,000 funding from a corporate partner.

Urban Design Through Ybor City

A 3.5 mile long, I-4 reconstruction project developed to reconnect and return dignity to a mixed ethnic community bisected by the original 1960’s interstate.  Terra Tectonics’ Urban Design and Landscape Architecture, which included roadway walls, fountains, fences, sign supports, paving, bridge treatments, planting and irrigation mitigated the highway system’s effects, while complementing Ybor City’s Historic District.  Implemented Solutions became the cornerstone for aesthetics applied on the entire interstate corridor widening within the City of Tampa.

Walkability & Low Impact Development in Newberry, Florida: 
Design Guidelines for Rural Communities

The goal of the study was to devise a method for developing design guidelines that will help sustain downtown Newberry’s small-town character, and to help the town achieve its broader goals of economic prosperity, social equity and ecological health. Public surveys directed the process and the results were measured and used to create design guidelines for walkability enhancements and low impact development strategies that will help Newberry, and other rural towns, develop the physical structure needed to maintain a sustainable downtown district.

Creating gardens in a foreign land, where a different language is spoken can be a challenging task. When the property is of an unusual shape with mostly steep terrain, surrounded by large scale residences, the task is compounded. Dominating the site from the crest of the slopes, the grand scale residence was designed by the wife’s father. Melding the architecture and the garden became one of the biggest challenges in a city that had no established nursery or landscape construction industry. Changes to the proposed architecture would help. Most challenging was convincing the architect that the changes were needed while keeping peace in the family.

Eagle Landing is a 1,600 acre master planned community consisting of 2,200 units.  The challenge to this project was to create a nostalgic village catering to the residents in a resort style atmosphere. Our goal was to deviate from the norm of a typical clubhouse facility by creating a pedestrian oriented environment. As planner, architects and landscape architects, every design discipline was used to weave an integrated palette of design uniformity throughout the project.

A Riverfront Residential Transformation
Indialantic, Florida

A much needed Riverfront Residential Transformation, Brad Smith Associates along with a creative design team, transformed a disaster area into a beautiful oasis.  A direct lightning hit, renovation, a contractor’s "false start”, lethargic insurance claims adjustments, and pummeling by five hurricanes – this residence was in need of repair.  Today the client enjoys a variety of carefully selected hardscape elements, water features and plant materials used to transform an empty canvas into a priceless masterpiece.
