Into the SCHOOLS for National Landscape Architecture Month (April 2013)
An Educational Outreach Activity
This year’s National Landscape Architecture Month (NLAM) in Florida will take us into our schools! Let’s introduce kindergarteners through 12th graders to landscape architecture.
If we 600 members reach out to just one classroom each we can touch 1800 students! Imagine that touching one grade of 3 classrooms would reach 5,400 potential landscape architecture students, future clients of landscape architects or future people of power like legislators who understand the profession. How about a career day for the whole school? Wow!
This is a no-brainer, folks! For a modest investment of our time and energy, we can influence the future of our chosen profession. The hardest thing to do will be to contact a school and find out the opportunities which may be available. There are certain procedures which each one of us will be required to follow if we are not already a volunteer at the school. This may involve filling out forms and receiving approval PRIOR to entering the school. So set up your career day now! It might be for 15 minutes or 45 minutes depending on what a teacher or specific program allows.
The Florida Chapter PR Committee will have material ready for us to take and modify, one set of material for elementary and one set for middle and high school students, comprising a simple PowerPoint able to be modified. Additionally, the PR Committee has a drawing exercise to entertain young children. To get an idea of what is available at National, go to ASLA’s Career Discovery page at http://www.asla.org/careerdiscovery.aspx. They have a PowerPoint and brochure which too can be modified and customized.
So pick a school or contact a teacher that you know and reach out to set a date during April. For more fun, dual present with a friend and pick two schools! Look for more information and material coming from the Florida Chapter in the near future. March – set a date. April – present landscape architecture to young, eager minds.
We will continue to be in touch with more information and links. Please keep me and your Section Chair informed of what you have set up! Share your successes! Go forth. Make a difference.
