Welcome to the website of the ASLA Florida Chapter Historic American Landscapes Survey. The Florida Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects hosts this site to promote the recognition, documentation, preservation, and enjoyment of historic landscapes in the state of Florida and the U.S. Territories of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. If you are seriously interested in historic landscapes, we invite you to get involved.
The Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) mission is to record historic landscapes in the United States and its territories through measured and interpretive drawings, written histories, and large-format photographs for the HABS/HAER/HALS Collection at the Library of Congress.
In 2000, the National Park Service, American Society of Landscape Architects, and Library of Congress entered into a Memorandum of Understanding that established the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS). In 2010, the three organizations signed the Agreement that made HALS a permanent program to document historic landscapes that serve as tangible evidence of our nation’s heritage and development.
The ASLA Florida Chapter provides professional guidance and technical advice for the program covering the state of Florida and the U.S. Territories of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
