Project Category: Residential

Project Name: Ocean House Penthouse

Project Location: Miami Beach, Florida 33139

Date of Completion: July 2011

Landscape Architect: Javier Delgado , Enea Garden Design, Inc.

Owner: Myles Chefetz

Landscape Contractor: Larqcon Group/Enea Garden Design

This 7th floor, rooftop penthouse terrace is situated between the stunning South Beach coastline to the east and the energetic Ocean Drive to the west. Views in both directions were emphasized with architectural elements that frame the perspectives, and the infinity edge pool leads the eye out to the ocean beyond. The terrace is a very exclusive space whose character is given as much by the surrounding environment as by the actual terrace itself.

The 4,600 sf terrace has been maximized for its use as an entertainment space. A full-size, commercial quality outdoor kitchen is covered by a custom designed pergola, whose retractable fabric shades allow use of the kitchen and bar even in the brightest of sun or during light rain. The raised pool deck includes a lounge space and a jacuzzi, from which the views out to the ocean are maximized. A lower level lounge, outdoor shower, and outdoor bathroom complete the full line of amenities.

Particularly challenging in this project was the selection of plant material. Being a rooftop terrace directly on the shoreline, the winds are intense and the salt content of the air high. In order to create a sustainably planted landscape, native beachfront species which are highly tolerant of salt and wind were used. The vegetation gives the character to the terrace, lending a beachfront atmosphere. Lush clusia hedges frame the terrace at the outside edge, giving privacy. Seagrape trees positioned  at the four terrace corners provide much needed shade from the South Florida sun, while palms on the pool deck give the tropical touch. Underplantings of dwarf clusia, dune sunflower, and Fakahatchee grasses complete the ensemble, whose overall effect is that of a relaxed vacation spot.
